Time Capsule: Nintendo Power Magazine Issue #1

Nintendo Power magazine debuted in 1988. From the beginning, Nintendo Power focused heavily on providing game strategy, reviews, and previews of upcoming games. It was an oasis for young Nintendo games, and here in this Time Capsule, I’m presenting the very first issue in full for your enjoyment.

I never got to get my hands on issues of this magazine except for when someone would bring a copy to school. Even then I would only get to browse through it for a very short time before they took it back. So being able to take my time and immerse myself in every page of this first issue has been a real treat. I hope you enjoy revisiting it as much as I have.

Time Capsule: 1989 WWF Survivor Series Program

Since 1987, the WWF’s Survivor Series has been a Thanksgiving tradition. For a few years, it took place on Thanksgiving night, then moved to Thanksgiving Eve for a while. After that, it bounced around to a Sunday night that was close to Thanksgiving.

But the yearly event has always been a highlight of the wrestling year with its unique concept where teams of four “strive to survive” in elimination tag team matches. The 1989 edition featured five of these matches filled with the biggest superstars of the day.

In this time capsule, look back at the big event through the pages of its official program, and try to remember what the anticipation was for big wrestling events like this.

1984 McDonaldland Fun Times Magazine Halloween Edition

It’s been a little while since I added any new scans to the archives, so what better way to make up for that than by posting a Halloween-related scan. There’s already a McDonaldland Fun Times magazine scan in the archives, but it’s from 1990 and wasn’t tied to a holiday or anything. But this one, oh my, this one is a Halloween-themed one and from the mid-80s, so it may be more in some of your wheelhouses. I hope you enjoy it.

Time Capsule: 1988 Great American Bash Program

In this Time Capsule, I’m looking at something very near and dear to my heart, as it’s the official program from the NWA’s Great American Bash tour in 1988.

For wrestling fans back then, the Great American Bash event was the highlight of the summer. The tours in 1986 and 1987 set the wrestling world on fire those summers, and while 1988 was a little less enticing than those first two years, it still featured several hot feuds. Not to mention the PPV event that year would feature the Tower of Doom match.

The PPV event would not feature the touted scaffold matches, but since this program covers the tour as a whole, that anticipated matchup is featured, as well as the War Games matches that also were not going to be on the PPV.

This program is a great look back into the goings-on in the NWA that summer, and I hope you enjoy flipping through it as much as I did.

Time Capsule: Suburban Commando Magazine From 1991

In this Time Capsule, we’re taking you back to the fall of 1991 and the debut of Hulk Hogan’s movie, Suburban Commando. This souvenir magazine is full of information on the movie, photos from the set, and several pinu-up posters. Check out this magazine at your leisure and reminisce about the days when Hulk Hogan was a budding Hollywood star.

Time Capsule: Rollergames Yearbook From 1990

Rollergames was a U.S. television series that presented a theatrical version of roller derby. It was broadcast for one season from 1989 to 1990. The show took place in the Super Roller Dome, and all shows were produced there. Instead of a banked oval track, it featured a figure eight track, where one side was heavily banked, and was known as the “wall of death”. In an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the show, a yearbook magazine was released highlighting the game, the skaters, and the storylines. I present that yearbook in its entirety for your enjoyment.

TV Guide’s 1994 Holiday Viewing Guide

For this Time Capsule, I’m taking you back to 1994 to check out TV Guide’s Holiday Viewing Guide. TV Guide used to put these extended articles in their magazines during the holiday season to highlight all of the holiday-themed offerings on television. They’s highlight upcoming movies, specials, and show episodes, along with giving their own thoughts on them. I always used to look forward to seeing this in the TV Guide, as I would use it kind of like a Sears catalog, in so much as I would go through it circling things I wanted to watch. So journey back to 1994 and see what all of the networks were offering viewers for Christmas that year.

Time Capsule: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Magazine From 1985

Back in the 1980s, there were more magazines out there than what was just on your local magazine rack. You may not have seen a lot of them, but there were magazines available and devoted to all kinds of kids’ favorite properties. He-Man, G.I. Joe, Barbie, The Smurfs, and numerous others. In most cases, you had to subscribe to these magazines, and you would receive a new issue every quarter.

I knew of the existence of these magazines but never was fortunate enough to be able to subscribe to them. In theory, I could have saved up my allowance money and subscribed, but that allowance money was usually going to wrestling magazines on the newsstand instead.

But for those of us who didn’t really get to experience these magazines, I’ve got a treat for you. In this Time Capsule, we’re going back in time to 1985 to check out the 2nd issue of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe magazine! It’s mostly intact, but I did remove a couple of irrelevant ads just to make the size of the post more manageable.

Time Capsule: 1984 TV Guide Fall Preview

One of the things I miss most about the past is just how much info used to come packed in an issue of TV Guide. In the ’90s, that thing became quite a thick publication that was filled with the nightly TV grids so you’d know what was on TV when, and cool ads for various shows and movies each night.

But as good as normal issues of TV Guide were, their best issue of the year was always their fall preview issues where they’d run down all of the new series debuting on network television that fall. Every year was sure to bring hits and misses, and going back through those old issues now is a real trip back in time.

With that in mind, I present this Time Capsule and all of the fall preview pages for the fall of 1984. There were some epic shows that debuted in 1984, plus a few not so epic ones too. Give the pages a look and remember what it was like flipping through a TV Guide fall preview back then.

Time Capsule: Bricks and Pieces LEGO Magazine from Summer 1989

LEGO has been a big part of all of our lives for many years. Not just the toys, but in a lot of their other endeavors as well. One of those endeavors that I always loved was their quarterly magazine publications. One of those publications was Bricks and Pieces magazine that was exclusive to LEGO Club members. So in this Time Capsule, we’re presenting the complete issue of Bricks and Pieces magazine from the summer of 1989. Enjoy!

Time Capsule: Disney Channel Guide for December 1984

Back when I was young and being jealous of my friends who had cable television, one of the channels I drooled over the most was The Disney Channel. It seemed so cool that Disney had its own channel! But what I didn’t know at that time was that they released their own Disney Channel magazine too. In it, would be details on everything that was coming to the channel that month so folks could set their watches and not miss any of the great programming that was being offered.

So what we have here is the guide section from The Disney Channel Magazine from December of 1984…the year they were debuting Mickey’s Christmas Carol on the channel. So enjoy this look back at what was coming to the channel that month long ago, and let yourself drift away to the days before streaming and on-demand viewing!
