Looking back over all my years, there’s one Halloween tradition that still glows in my memory like a jack-o’-lantern on a chilly October night: Tom & Jerry’s TBS Funhouse Halloween Special. It first aired in 1987, back when I didn’t even have cable at home, and for a few magical years, it returned every Halloween season like clockwork.
In the late ’80s, Ted Turner and TBS rolled out Tom & Jerry’s Funhouse, a glorious hour-and-a-half cartoon block that ran mornings and afternoons. It wasn’t just Tom & Jerry…it was a treasure trove of Looney Tunes, Merrie Melodies, Droopy, and Popeye. The variety was unbeatable. But when the holidays rolled around, they cranked up the charm with themed specials for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. These weren’t just one-offs…they aired multiple times leading up to the big day, each packed with handpicked shorts that fit the season perfectly.
What made the Halloween special stand out even more were the live-action bumpers featuring Josh Jarboe and Audra Lee from Kid’s Beat. They’d dress up, crack jokes, and share fun tidbits about Halloween history. It added a layer of personality that made the whole thing feel like a party you were invited to.
I still remember the first time I saw a commercial for the Halloween special. I was at my grandparents’ house…they had cable, and their TV rarely strayed from TBS. Between episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and NWA Wrestling, I caught a glimpse of the promo and lit up with excitement. My mom actually drove me back to their house just so I could watch it. I was over the moon. A full block of Halloween-themed cartoons? It felt like the holiday had arrived early.
By the next year, we finally had cable at home. I couldn’t believe my luck when I saw the commercial again…they were bringing it back! I watched it religiously every year it aired. It became part of my Halloween rhythm, right up there with carving pumpkins and sneaking candy corn.
Kids today don’t really get to experience that kind of anticipation. Everything’s on-demand now, and while that’s convenient, it robs you of that special feeling…waiting for something seasonal, something fleeting. That Halloween special was one of those rare treats you had to catch while it lasted, and that made it all the more magical.
Most folks lost access to it after 1992, but if you’re reading this, you’re not “most folks.” You’re one of the lucky ones. The full special has been lovingly preserved and uploaded to Archive.org, so you can relive it just like I did, or maybe experience it for the first time.
So I’ll stop rambling and let you dive in. If you’ve got a cozy evening ahead and a craving for some retro Halloween vibes, this special is waiting for you. Trust me, it’s worth the trip back in time.
Just watched the whole thing. Lots of flashback moments – Gossamer! – so thanks for sharing this!
Nice! I might have to check this out.
