I do not know about you, but the Game Genie changed my video gaming life more than anything else I ever owned, with the obvious exception of the Nintendo itself. Once I finally got my hands on one, it became a permanent part of my setup. If the NES was on, the Game Genie was plugged in. It was that simple.
My best friend at the time, Geoffrey, was one of those kids who always seemed to get whatever he wanted the moment he wanted it. When he saw the commercial for the Game Genie, he absolutely lost his mind. I still remember the phone call that night. He told me he had pitched such a massive fit that his dad finally gave in, put him in the car, and drove half an hour to the nearest department store to buy it. That was the kind of power the Game Genie had over kids. It was not just a new accessory. It was a promise that the impossible could suddenly become possible.
The next day at school, Geoffrey looked like a zombie. He had stayed up all night playing Nintendo with his new toy, and he could barely keep his eyes open. I knew right then that I had to get over to his house that weekend for a sleepover. I needed to see this thing in action. And when I finally did, I was blown away. It felt like someone had handed us the keys to the secret back rooms of every game we owned.
I started saving money immediately. Allowance, loose change, odd jobs around the neighborhood, anything I could scrape together. It did not take long before I had enough to buy one of my own. And when I finally plugged it in, it revolutionized the way I played. Games that had frustrated me for years suddenly opened up. Levels I had never seen before were now within reach. Old cartridges that had been collecting dust came back to life.
Unlimited lives. Unlimited ammo. Super jumps. Invincibility. It felt like magic. Sure, I knew it was technically cheating, but it made bad games fun and fun games incredible. It breathed new life into everything I owned. Looking back, it was some of the best money I have ever spent in my life, and I can still say that without hesitation.
Even today, when I fire up an emulator and play old NES ROMs, I still look up those old Game Genie codes. There is something comforting about seeing those strings of letters again. They take me right back to sitting on the floor in front of the TV, flipping through the little codebook, and feeling like I had discovered a secret language.
The Game Genie was more than a cheat device. It was a doorway. It let us explore games in ways the developers never intended. It let us see what was hidden behind the curtain. And for a generation of kids who lived and breathed Nintendo, it made the impossible feel possible.
Some accessories were forgettable. The Game Genie was unforgettable.

Such an awesome piece of hardware and you are so right when you say it breathed new life into those unplayed games. I could take a game that was absolute garbage, plug in the the game genie, and suddenly I’m very entertained.
