Green Christmas Punch

Christmas in a cup.

You may not know this, but I like to think I’m a pretty good cook. Not in the fancy, television‑chef sort of way, but in the way that matters most to me…good old comfort food. The kind of cooking that fills a kitchen with familiar smells and makes folks feel at home.

One of my favorite traditions, and one that ties me straight back to my childhood, is my mom’s green Christmas punch. I can still see her in the kitchen, pulling out the big glass punch bowl that only came down from the shelf a couple of times a year. She’d scoop in the lime sherbet, pour in the ginger ale, and watch as the whole thing fizzed and foamed into a bright, cheerful green. To me, it looked like magic. That punch wasn’t just a drink. It was Christmas in a bowl.

As a kid, I’d hover nearby, waiting for the first ladleful to be poured. The sherbet would float on top like little islands, melting slowly into the sweet, bubbly mix. My brother and I would line up with cups in hand, grinning ear to ear, knowing that Christmas had officially arrived once Mom’s punch was served.

Now that I’m grown, I’ve taken over the tradition. Every December, I make a big deal out of unveiling the punch, just like Mom did. I haul out the bowl, scoop in the sherbet, and pour with a flourish. Folks around here have come to expect it from me, and they’ll tell you it wouldn’t feel like Christmas without that green punch.

The truth is, I don’t have to hype it up. The punch stands on its own. One sip and you understand why it’s lasted all these years. It’s sweet, fizzy, creamy, and just plain fun. Some people call it addictive. I just call it home.

That punch every year is more than a recipe. It’s a connection to my mom, to the Christmases of my childhood, and to the joy of carrying on something simple but meaningful. It’s my way of keeping her spirit alive in the season, and it’s one of my favorite traditions.

Because when I ladle out that green punch, I’m not just serving a drink. I’m serving up memory, nostalgia, and a little bit of Christmas magic.

And I want to share that Christmas magic with you. Below is the recipe for simple and nostalgic punch that helps make my Christmas sparkle every year. If you end up making it this season, I’d love to hear about it.
