When I Got Prince Adam For Christmas

Christmas morning, 1984. I was six years old, still in footie pajamas, hair sticking up in every direction, eyes wide with the kind of wonder only a kid can muster. The living room was glowing with the soft, blinking lights of the tree, and the scent of Pillsbury Orange Cinnamon rolls drifted in from the kitchen. But none of that mattered, not really. Because I had one thing on my mind: toys.

The year before, Santa had delivered the crown jewel of my young life…Castle Grayskull. That green, skull-faced fortress from the Masters of the Universe had become the centerpiece of every battle I staged on the living room carpet. He-Man, Skeletor, Man-At-Arms…they all had their place. But there was one figure missing. One I had circled in the Sears Wish Book with a red crayon and whispered about like a secret spell.

Prince Adam.

To most folks, he might’ve just looked like a He-Man in a purple vest and pink tights. But to me, he was the key to the whole story. Prince Adam was the bridge between the ordinary and the extraordinary. He was the kid who could become a hero. And on that Christmas morning, when I tore the wrapping paper off that blister pack and saw his smiling face and that unmistakable purple sword, I knew Santa had come through.

I also got Orko that year, and don’t get me wrong, I loved that little floating goofball. He had his own magic tricks and a pull-string that made him spin across the floor. But Prince Adam? He was different. He wasn’t just another figure. He was the one I needed to make my Castle Grayskull stories complete.

I remember holding him up to the light, admiring the way his vest shimmered and how his boots matched He-Man’s, only in a softer shade. I’d swap him in and out of his alter ego, sometimes mid-battle, shouting “By the power of Grayskull!” loud enough to wake up the neighbors. My parents probably heard that phrase a hundred times before New Year’s.

Prince Adam became my go-to. He wasn’t just a toy. He was a companion. He rode Battle Cat into countless adventures, rescued Teela from the clutches of Beast Man, and stood tall against the evil forces of Skeletor.

That Christmas in 1984 lives in my memory like a snow globe…perfect, still, and sparkling with magic. And at the center of it all stands Prince Adam, smiling in his purple vest, ready to save Eternia once again.

  1. Reminds me of me back then. XD

Prince Adam had a toy that was fun to look at. Something about the color of that Power Sword made it almost like candy for the eye.
