American Pie

Mickey on Movies: American Pie (1999)

Back in 1999, I was 21 years old, and in the perfect state of mind to find teen sex comedy movies funny. When I saw the trailers for American Pie, it certainly looked like the kind of movie that I would find entertaining. Then once the movie was released and people started going to see it, the word of mouth started to spread about how good it was.

The scene that everyone wanted to talk about was the pie scene, which was probably exactly what the producers wanted. After hearing about it from several friends, I knew I had to go watch it. My future wife and I made it a night out, and we both enjoyed…me more than her though as she is a few years older and more mature than me.

American Pie revitalized the teen comedy for a new age, and follows four high school friends—Jim, Oz, Finch, and Kevin—who make a pact to lose their virginity before prom night. Each of them takes a different approach: Oz tries to impress girls by joining the choir, Kevin struggles to convince his girlfriend to have sex, Finch spreads rumors about his manhood and sexual prowess, while Jim faces a series of embarrassing setbacks, including the infamous scene involving a pie, as well as blowing his big chance while everyone at school watched online.

As prom night approaches, they all learn valuable lessons about relationships, self-confidence, and the pressures of growing up.

In it’s time, I would give the movie a full five stars. But with age comes different tastes in what I think is entertaining. But I don’t want to take anything away from this movie. All of the actors done a great job playing their parts, the writing and plot certainly is funny, and the themes remain relevant. While it was five stars for me back in 1999, I lower it a little with modern eyes. But if you haven’t seen it in a while, it’s certainly worth going back to revisit. And if you’re someone who has never seen it, be sure to give it a watch as you’ll certainly be entertained by it.

3.5 out of 5.0 stars
