The Pizza Burger From Burger King in the ’80s

Burger King Pizza Burger

Let us take a moment to honor one of the great lost treasures of 1980s fast food, the Burger King Pizza Burger. It was one of those short lived creations that came and went before most people even noticed, but for the kids who crossed paths with it, the memory stuck like mozzarella on a hot grill.

The screenshot calls it the Pizza Double Cheeseburger, but that name never meant anything to me. I only ever knew it as the pizza burger. The timeline lines up perfectly, so I am almost certain this is the one I remember. The only thing that gives me pause is the double part. I do not recall it being a double at all. In my mind it was a single patty with pizza sauce and cheese, simple and perfect. But memory has a way of smoothing out the details, especially when melted mozzarella is involved.

What I do remember is the experience. The pizza burger did not last long on the menu, but I managed to get my hands on it a couple of times. It was exactly what the name promised. A hamburger topped with pizza sauce and a generous layer of mozzarella. No fancy gimmicks. No complicated ingredients. Just two childhood favorites stacked together in a way that made perfect sense to a kid. Burgers plus pizza felt like the height of culinary genius when you were young enough to think lunchables were a legitimate meal.

I know the timeline is right because I can picture the exact moment I ate one. It was a Saturday afternoon, the kind where the sun came through the living room window at just the right angle, and I was glued to NWA Pro Wrestling. Tully Blanchard was wrestling Brad Armstrong, and for reasons only my younger self could explain, I was completely locked into that match. I can still see the ring, the crowd, the grainy broadcast quality that every wrestling show had back then. That episode aired in April 1987, which means the pizza burger and I crossed paths at precisely the right moment in history.

It is funny what the mind decides to hold onto. A random wrestling match. A forgotten fast food experiment. Two things that should have nothing to do with each other, yet somehow fused into a single memory that has stayed with me for decades. I cannot tell you whether I remember the match because of the burger or the burger because of the match. All I know is that the two are forever linked in my brain, like they were meant to be part of the same afternoon.

And that is why, all these years later, the Burger King Pizza Burger still lives rent free in my heart. It was not just a sandwich. It was a moment. A flavor tied to a time when life was simple, wrestling was serious business, and a kid could believe that combining pizza and burgers was the kind of idea that could change the world.
