“Go, Gadget, go…”
Poor Inspector Gadget. He had all the James Bond gadgets, but none of the cool. In fact, his niece Penny and dog Brain were often two steps ahead of him in solving the crime, or even correcting his mistakes. Bond would never have stood for that.
As voiced by Don Adams—best known for his role as secret agent Maxwell Smart on the series Get Smart!—Gadget was a bumbling inspector, despite being blessed with the ability to fly, bounce, and stretch his arms to great lengths with the command, “Go, Go Gadget Arms!”
His boss, Quimby, handed out Gagdet’s assignments, which usually involved battling the evil Dr. Claw and his cat, Madcat. Claw headed an organization called “Mean and Nasty” (MAD). Though his face was never shown, Claw’s menacingly hoarse voice (by voice-vet Frank Welker) was enough to scare the pants off many a young viewer.
The series was originally syndicated from 1983 to 1985 before gaining its greatest exposure on Nickelodeon from 1987 to 1992. Near the end of its Nickelodeon run, CBS reran the show on Saturday afternoons, while NBC presented a nighttime special, Inspector Gadget Saves Christmas, on December 4, 1992.
