Hot Dr. Pepper

With Christmas just a day or so away (depending on where you are) you may be trying to think of something new in which to amaze your guests. Well, I’ve got your solution. You can serve them hot Dr. Pepper!

Apparently, Dr. Pepper tried to make this a thing back in the ’60s. While the ’60s surely were a wild time by all accounts, heating up soda and then drinking had to be an idea that came after ingesting some banned substance.

That being said when I discovered one of these old ads several years ago, I actually decided to give it a try. It wasn’t bad, but there was nothing about it that made me want to make it part of our holiday traditions either. After heating it up, it has more of a flat taste than it does when it’s ice cold.

The recipe calls for pouring the hot Dr. Pepper over a thin slice of lemon in the bottom of the glass. I tried that, but wasn’t impressed. That probably has more to do with me than it does with the lemon, as I’ve never cared for lemon in iced tea, nor the Pepsi or Coke varieties that offer a taste of lemon.

Alternatively, I thought a slice of orange would be better suited for pairing with Dr. Pepper, so we tried that too, and it was quite an improvement over the lemon. While the whole thing still wasn’t something really memorable, it was more than tolerable.

If you live on the wild side, maybe you’ll want to give hot Dr. Pepper a try this Christmas season or on some cold winter night in January.
