Have you ever had a Smoothie cup? If not, let me take a minute to say, bless your heart! Because if you’re a connoisseur of fine candies then you’ve been missing out. While Smoothies have been made by the Boyer Candy Company for decades, they’re not always easy to find all over the country. I even have trouble finding them from time to time, but when I was out running some errands today, I came across six-packs of the delicacies.
Smoothies are like Reese’s Cups in size and shape, and the center is peanut butter. But what sets a Smoothie apart is that the peanut butter cup isn’t coated with chocolate, it’s coated with a butterscotch confection. And if you think a peanut butter cup covered in chocolate is good, then you should try it coated in butterscotch!
I’ve always been a fan of Reese’s Cups, but I’ve always held Smoothies just a notch above them. Maybe its the fact that I don’t get to have them very often since they can be hard to find. Or maybe it’s that the butterscotch is just a better coating than chocolate. Or it could be the nostalgia of them.
When I was a kid, out little town had three places to get candy. There was the local grocery store, and two convenience stores…Jiff-E-Jack and Venables. Venables name was actually Venable’s Grocery, but it was just a convenience store on the corner of the two main roads through these parts. While I don’t remember the grocery store carrying Smoothies, the other two places did.
Usually when I stopped with Dad at either place, he’d let me get a piece of candy. Sometimes I would be cheap on him and just get a single piece of Super Bubble. Other times I would pick up a whole candy bar. But in those in between times it was almost always a Smoothie or their sister candy, a Mallo Cup.
But anyway, I picked up the six-pack of Smoothie cups today and could hardly wait to tear into them. But I restrained myself and waiting until after dinner to enjoy one two of them. The smooth butterscotch coating and the creamy peanut butter center combined on my taste buds and took me back to a time in the ’80s when I was young, and the only concern I had was finding another Smoothie cup.
These days I have to be careful with things like Smoothies due to my sugar, but on occasion, I can splurge and enjoy a nice treat. Today was one of those days, and even after all of these years, Smoothie Cups still hit the spot.
