Sony Pictures has announced that a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife will premiere on December 20, 2023.
Afterlife was directed by Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the 1984 original. As well as a new cast – including Paul Rudd and Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard – last year’s film saw the return of original cast members Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts in their classic roles. Reitman and writer Gil Kenan also confirmed that the sequel will return to the series’ home of New York City for the sequel.
“One thing I wanted to do [with Afterlife] is set the table for Ghostbusters as a franchise to have all kinds of movies,” Reitman said last year. “There are so many places for Ghostbusters to go. The question is, what’s the starting place? And that’s what Afterlife is about. It’s about these generations making amends with each other in a way that brings one story to a close and starts another one.”
