I’ve never in my life had an advent calendar of any kind. Not as a kid, and not as a married adult. I’ve always made sure my kids had one, and it’s been one of the highlights of their Christmas season every year. But I saw this thing online last month and decided that this was the year I was going to have an advent calendar.
Picking this one up was an easy decision since I’ve been a lover of all things LEGO since about 1984. I’m already a collector of the minifigures, and this set includes six exclusive figures, so that alone was enough to entice me to part with my money. Then throw in all the neat little vehicles you get to make and the playmat that is attached to the box, and I’ve got something I’m really excited about every morning.
But let’s see what was behind Door #1 on this snowy December 1st…
It’s a little cargo ship. Not too bad looking for its miniature size either. I can’t explain the feeling of relaxation mixed with nostalgia that I get from putting LEGO sets together. Even small ones like this. I seem to drift back to ten years old and the troubles of the world wash away for just a little while.
I already feel like this LEGO advent calendar is going to be one of the best parts of this Christmas season for me. Now I know how my kids have felt every December morning as they go about seeing what little surprise awaits them. Last night, I almost had a little “night before Christmas” feeling as I lay in bed and the thought and wonder crossed my mind as to what little trinket would be first to pop out of this thing. Now as I’m sitting here writing this, I’m already getting giddy thinking about getting another little surprise tomorrow morning.
Oh, below is a picture of the playmat that folds out of the back of the box so you have a little place to display/play with the LEGOs you get each day. I didn’t want to leave you wondering what it may look like.
If the playmat is any indication, and the fact I already got a ship for the water portion of the map, it looks like there may be some kind of helicopter in my future, as well as train cars maybe? Probably some small cars or trucks too. Just this play mat alone has my imagination going crazy.
Once I spotted this set, I avoided looking at photos of what was included, preferring to be surprised every day. The only thing I know about the set going into it is that it has those six exclusive minifigures. And that’s all I want to know.
I don’t know if I’ll have the time to post pictures every day, but at the least, I’ll try to do a weekly update post showing off what came out of this advent calendar for each day.
